Starting the New Year Right

Alice Stroppel beginner Workshop 1 9 2016

The first workshop of the year! New caners were enthusiastic for sure in this beginning cane workshop. Maggie Mora, Pauline Somoza, Esther Manso, are sisters and they met in Sebring for a mini reunion and to take my workshop. How fun is that? Marilyn Wright is  a ceramic artist and is excited about the possibilities of polymer.

Tons of laughter in this class, we all went away smiling.

The next beginner workshop will be on Jan 30th.

Alice Stroppel build your cane inventory 1-2016

Toni Carroll, Barbara Snapp, Kathi Keck, Nancy Simmons, Linda Boyd, and Judy Fala and Marilyn Wright created fun and funky canes this weekend in a Build your cane inventory workshop held on Jan. 16. Marilyn had to leave early and I’m sorry I didn’t get her in the photo.

Next step would be to take the cane mapping workshop and get ready to let your work explode.

Only three weeks until Marie Segal arrives to teach 2 one day workshops., Find out more here.

New! Charming Cane Workshop

Alice Stroppel Charming Canes

It’s been a busy couple of weeks  for me. Randee Ketzel was here for to teach a fabulous two day workshop, thank you, Randee. (See the last post)

Tuesday, I held my book club meeting here and reviewed many of the  polymer clay books and publications. I gave a brief history of polymer clay and shared with them my journey with clay. They all knew I was a polymer clay enthusiast, but had not ever really seen all  my work or really know much about polymer. It was a fun afternoon, I was happy to introduce them all to this exciting medium.

I’ve been working on new canes for a workshop I’ve been thinking about for awhile. These canes are intended to become charms to wear around your neck or on your wrist as a bracelet.

 three charms -Alice Stroppel

I was fortunate to have them featured on Polymer Clay Daily a couple of weeks ago. It’s good to know they were liked by so many people.

I’ve been enjoying these new canes because they involve extruded canes used in a slightly unconventional way. If you know me or my work at all, you know I am always just a bit different most of the time. It’s what makes this fun.

I’ve scheduled  my first charm workshop for the 18th and 19th of July. From 9am to 4pm on Saturday and 9am to 3pm on Sunday.

Studio 21 supplies all your equipment, tools and supplies and for this workshop. If you have an extruder, please bring that with you.

I’ll provide the clay unless you would like to bring your own colors. We will not be making all of the canes pictured above, this is a technique class and you’ll be adding you’re own voice to the finished charms.

Down load this application form for you and your friends! *g*

Another exciting anouncement… I’ve been asked to stay open one night a week for open studio time. We begin tonight! I’ll be here for normal hours, 11:00am until 3:00pm and then I’ll remain open until 8:00pm every Thursday.

Fee is $5 an hour and $5 to bake your items. Your choice how long you stay,

I’ll be here to answer questions and help if I can, but this is not a “class”, it’s a time to get together, work on a project, try or refine a new technique. A great excuse to have fun with a group of like minded people.

Space is limited to 8 people.

See you sometime I hope.

Randee Ketzel and Her Faux Tricks

The talented Randee Ketzel was here at the Studio and taught a group of very happy women how to make some incredible faux pieces.

Thank you Randee for a wonderful weekend and thanks to this great group of women for making Studio 215 a crazy happy place.

Randee sells her work on her Etsy site and she has some tutorials listed as well. Her fabulous book Polymer Clay Gemstones: The Art of Deception can be ordered from Amazon.

FYI Randee, Sarah Shriver and I will be teaching at 2015 LONE STAR RETREAT: September 18, 19 and 20, 2015

I’m pretty excited about getting to meet all the great people from the Houston Guild and more, plus I get to see Randee again.

For more information visit the Houston Polymer Clay Guild site. I think the retreat is almost full.

syndee holt’s Visit to Studio 215

syndee holt stopped by Sebring and Studio 215 on her way to Orlando Clay Fandango. I was lucky to have her visiting and teaching for a few days.

syndee holt workshop

She introduce Mokume Gane to “new to polymer” students in an evening workshop. I was delighted to hear the exclamations of delight that came for those students. All had taken a beginners class with me and they all want more. I think I’ve started something, at least that’s my goal here at Studio 215.

syndee represents Sculpey products and is the author of New Color Tuesday posted on Sculpey’s blog.

syndee was wonderful about explaining how to use many of the Sculpey tools that I have available for use at Studio 215. We didn’t have time for them to try everything, but they will know they’re here to use.

I provide the pasta machines and tools for those students who are brand new to polymer so they can try everything out before buying . My first step was to make sure I had pasta machines, tiles and plenty of the Sculpey Tools for everyone to try.

Everyone went home with beautiful creations. I neglected to get photos of the finished pieces, but they were happy for sure.

syndee was here just in time to witness what I’m now referring to at the year of the gator roundup, We had three gators removed from our lake in three days and there is still at least one more to go. that is very unusual for our little lake.

Maybe not a bucket list item for syndee but an experience for sure.

We visited Bok tower in Lake Wales and the Highlands Hammock State park here in Sebring. Syndee went back by herself to walk the catwalk through the swamp today on her way to Fandango because it was crazy raining when we went on Tuesday and we couldn’t walk it.

Maybe not up there on the unusual scale with alligators, but she tells me that rain is an event as well for this southern California girl.  She posted some fabulous pictures of her catwalk here on her Facebook page.

Thank you for a wonderful few days syndee and I’ll see you again soon.
